New York Harbor - There are No Words...
May 29, 2023
To be able to be at this great place on Memorial Day is without words!
When we left Staten Island to go into the harbor with Beach House to allow us to get pictures of our boat with the Statue of Liberty, we were all excited. The water was just slick as glass and no wind predicted until 10am. Amazingly, 10 minutes before I took pictures of Beach House, great winds came up with white caps on the harbor. I just couldn't believe it, white caps and also water shuttles from Staten Island to Manhattan. We got the pictures quickly and did not get videos...A couple hours before we arrived at Great Kills the prior week, one of the boats that came from Sandy Point at the tip of New Jersey had seen 2 humpback whales feeding in the water. Needless to say we did not see anything 2 hours later the previous week. Oh well, we have seen different whales before in different places. BUT we got to see our humpback whale. My pictures while not great, I did get a picture of the dorsal fin to confirm! The captain offered to turn around and go back but Beach House was in front of us moving to the Statue of Liberty for pictures.
After tying up in Liberty Landing Marina in Jersey City we stayed in the area and walked close to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. The loopers staying there also got together for Docktails (Cocktails on a boat) on a large tanker ship on Memorial Day evening.
We travelled on the ferry in Jersey City to the financial district. There were several things we wanted to see in the city. Unfortunately, Birding Bob was not doing tours in Central Park so no birds seen!
After getting off the subway, our first stop was the Guggenheim Museum. There was a special exhibit of Picasso from 1901 which did not look like any typical Picasso painting or drawing. In addition they also had on exhibit Cezanne, Van Gogh, Renoir, Degas, and Monet paintings which were great!
Another special exhibit at the New York Public Library was Shakespeare's First Folio while these were beautiful, the item at which I enjoyed looking was A.A.Milne's sons' stuffed animals who represented the characters in Winnie the Pooh. There they were in front of me, the real thing!
Now for one of the weirder things on display with the description below...
While we left Jersey City, we traveled up the Hudson River to Croton on Hudson. Danny and I were able to catch a train to go into the city so we did that without trouble. The train ended in Grand Central Station and we travelled uptown to Sotheby's.
On display June 1 which is when we went, were the items being auctioned in September in London of Freddie Mercury's memorabilia, Michael Jordan's tennis shoes from the 6 championship series on the game where they won the series (private sale-looking for 33 million-autographed, size 13 on one foot and 13 1/2 on the foot he broke early in his career), Paul Newman's estate, and 2 great rings- 1 ruby (don't know value) and 1 pink diamond (thought to be worth 35 million). I liked the diamond personally but Danny said it was above his credit card limit. The woman showing it to us said he needed a new credit card!
Freddie Mercury lyrics to Somebody to Love (estimated $187-249,000)
Working lyrics for "Bohemian Rhapsody"(estimated 1-1.5million)
My pink diamond for a mere 35 million dollars!
We had a wonderful time going to a special bookstore, Kitchen Arts & Letters, selling only books pertaining to cooking and drinking and looking at cameras for my dead Nikon. Had a great lunch at Two Wheels- Vietnamese food and dinner at La Grande Boucherie all fantastic.
Next we move up the Hudson River Valley. Danny and I will be renting a car to see various things throughout the valley, so it may be a week or so before I write again!
