The Lighthouses of the Hudson Valley...

There were numerous lighthouses throughout the 1800's along the Hudson River to assist boats and ships in the Hudson River.  There are 7 existing lighthouses and the Statue of Liberty on the Hudson River.

-The Statue of Liberty was designed in France and given as a gift to the United States.  While it was a gift celebrating the 100th birthday to the US from France, it was not opened until 1886.  A base had to be built to display the structure on Bledsoe's Island.  The granite and Rosendale cement for the base was obtained from the Hudson River.  The Statue of Liberty is considered the start of the Hudson River.

-Jeffrey's Hook Lighthouse built in 1920 with recycled materials from a lighthouse in Sandy Hook, NJ.  There was no light keeper to live on the property but keepers nearby oversaw the property.  The Coast Guard wanted to dismantle the lighthouse.  There was a public outcry to keep the lighthouse even though it was directly under the George Washington Bridge.  It was given to NYC parks in 1951.  There is a famous book called The Little Red Lighthouse Under The Great Gray Bridge.

-Sleepy Hollow Lighthouse was built in 1883 with 5 floors of living space.  In 1959, the US government declared the land underwater surplus and for sale.  Interestingly, General Motors purchased the land and filled in the land for its car plant.  It is now owned by the NYC Parks.  It is black on top and white on the bottom.

-Stony Point was the first lighthouse on the Hudson built in 1826.  It is no longer active and part of a park.  It is heavily covered in forest greens. There is a light tower now in the river.

-Esopus Meadows Lighthouse known as "Maid of the Meadows" was built in 1871.  This was built to replace one built in 1837.  It is accessible by boat only and is the only lighthouse remaining made of wood.

-Rondout Lighthouse was built in 1915 and this is the 3rd lighthouse.  The first one built of wood in 1837 and the second built of bluestone in 1867 was needed due to the coal being shipped from Pennsylvania  down the Delaware and Hudson Canal in 1828.  This lighthouse is at the entrance into the town of Kingston.

-Saugerties Lighthouse was built in 1869 to replace the original one in 1835.  Currently this lighthouse is a museum and bed and breakfast and owned by a conservancy.

-Hudson-Athens Lighthouse was built in 1874.  This lighthouse was needed due to ground flats not being visible at high tides.  It was actually on the front cover of the Saturday Evening Post back in the 1940's.

All of these lighthouses were absolutely beautiful and seeing them from the water just special!
