Delaware Bay to the New Jersey Shore...

May 22, 2023

Danny and I left Delaware City Marina with our flotilla of boats towards the Delaware Bay at 5:22am!  The winds and waves were promising as well as riding the tide down giving us 2 knots of current to improve our speed.  As you can see, we saw much commerce on the Bay and stayed away.  I did take a close up picture of the movement of water at the front of this tanker- looks like a sheet of water.  Tim told us it takes 3 miles for them to stop, so just think about that if you got in their way.

As we came down the Bay, we were making such good time and there was bad weather and winds projected for later this week so instead of our planned stop in Cape May, NJ, the captain decided we wanted to move up the coast further north.  I contacted some boaters moving north out in the ocean to check on conditions.  They said it was not bad so we went another 50 miles to Atlantic City.  The state marina where we tied up was in front of the Golden Nugget Casino.  We had another boater meet us and warned us on crime concerns in Atlantic City.  We had no problems.  My best friend from college, Kim, came to visit the following day and we had lunch.  Wanting to see the Boardwalk, Kim dropped us off there so we could walk back to the marina.  The Resort building she told us was the only original hotel back from the early days long before gambling.  The area is very sad although there appears to be some building of new homes that hopefully will help the area.  Kim told us that the city was so corrupt that the state of New  Jersey runs the city.  Like I said, very sad.

Following a cocktail party on one of the boats, a couple on the Loop and I decided to go to one of the oldest restaurants in Atlantic City.   Dock's Oyster House started in 1897 and it was outstanding.  The place was packed and we sat at the piano bar.  Sue and I got crab, scallops, and shrimp risotto in lobster cream sauce and her husband got flounder and crab.  It was outstanding!

Our next stop along the Jersey shore was Brielle and Manasquan.  The ocean started out okay but the middle 4 hrs out of the 7 hour trip was very rough.  Of course while it was rough, there were alarms going off saying we had no power to the bilge pumps.  Danny needed to go down in the engine room and I drove the boat.  You do what you have to do.  Danny never found anything except the breaker being tripped.  We heard the Coast Guard get called for a bleeding whale.  Finally we got passed the commuter train bridge to Brielle Yacht Club.  The yacht club rents slips out for those who don't have their boats in the slips.  Just great guys and a great place.  We really enjoyed the stay.  Had a great meal at The Shipwreck and the next day we walked into Manasquan around downtown.  Found a great Italian market called Joe Leone's which had all kinds of prepared foods and was wonderful!

Bridge lift to allow us to pass into Manasquan River.  A view of the Manasquan River.  The whole area was just beautiful!

As we were preparing to take off today, some young guys pulled up to weigh their fish caught a few hours earlier.  It was a blue fin tuna weighing in at 250 pounds.
