Wildlife to New Smyrna Beach (MM846)...
March 21, 2023
The abundance of wildlife we enjoyed moving from Eau Galle to New Smyrna Beach was quite impressive. We saw many dolphins and manatees as well as birds. We saw mother and baby dolphins and some enjoying riding our wake behind the boat.
It was exciting seeing them close to the boat. It appeared one of a group of 3 manatees appeared to have something around its abdomen and pulling maybe a float. I tried 5 times over 90 minutes making a call to FWC to report and each time got caught up in a phone loop hell. We stopped at Titusville to get gas and reported it to them at the marina. They promised me they would notify the authorities. I guess it could have been some research project as the manatee was able to dive down but rather be safe than sorry. You can see it!
We saw Great Blue Herons, Pelicans with Cormorants, Osprey, and a Tricolored Heron
Danny and I had the opportunity to go by NASA and see the buildings where the Saturn V was built as well as the platforms for the rocket launches.
Even though we traveled 70 miles and a stop for gas AND white caps on the ICW, we agreed it was a good travel day. Seeing all the wildlife I believe helped to make the trip enjoyable. When we arrived in New Smyrna Beach, the marina was right off the ICW so it was an easy entrance. We were only here one night so we walked down to the beach which was about 1 mile away on Flagler Avenue over a drawbridge. Danny had seen on the news before I came back about the wild goings on at Spring Break here but we did not see it. When we ate dinner, the guys next to us that owned businesses mention last week there were 400 Spring Breakers on the roof of the 7-11 by the beach. I said OMG, and the guys said oh they were much tamer this year??? At the beach, we went to The Breakers, an old bar supposedly that has been here since the 1900's and redone in 1990. The building and the Seashore Inn were very reminiscent of old Nagshead and Cape Hatteras when I was a kid. The pounding surf also showed why we did not travel on "the outside", the ICW was rough enough for us.

Although he isn't wildlife, he certainly is an animal. While walking a woman came by on her golf cart so we could meet Jethro... his support says Pretty Boy Jethro and Boss Hog- Danny is jealous!
The place we wanted to eat, The Third Wave, was not open on Tuesday so we came back to the marina and ate there, The Outriggers which was very good with snapper on coconut rice and asparagus. I almost forgot to mention that I always think of New Smyrna Beach as the Shark bite capital of the US if not the world. I don't know the statistics but in the windows of the T-shirts shops, they advertise this on the T shirts. I think they should reexamine their public relations if the town want people to visit- just my opinion!
Now on to Palm Coast...
