On the Way to Palm Coast

March 22,  2023 (MM 803)...

Leaving New Smyrna, we traveled along the Intracoastal Waterway to Palm Coast.  We went past Daytona which is where this bridge was located.  The base of the post were done in small tiles to form a mosaic.  Beautiful and sad only people on the water can appreciate them.
Interestingly, we came about a sailboat, Tides Inn, which was from Yorktown, Va.  Danny called them on the radio to ask for a "slow pass" and as we got closer saw the Yorktown on it.  Danny told the couple he had worked for York County for 30 years.  We did not ask where they lived in the county.  I assumed they were coming back from Florida and/or the Bahamas on their way back to Virginia.

We saw many derelict vessels run aground.  My understanding there was a Hurricane Nicole that caused a great deal of damage in this area back in the late fall.

Prior to going through Daytona, we came upon the Ponce de Leon Inlet where there is a lighthouse.  We did not get real close but close enough for a picture.  It was built in 1887 and you can climb to the top- 175 steps and is named Ponce Inlet Lighthouse.

We have an "air draft" of 16 feet with the antennas and radar down and this says 17 feet.  Danny was taking no chances...As we were approaching the marina and I was getting the lines ready for docking, I saw 2 small boats looking similar to kayaks but flat ends on the front and back, 2 people in the boat kneeling on one knee and using a paddle.  Once tied up, I asked the dockhand what were they doing?  He said, "I don't know.  All I know is they are students from Canada who come down here for 6 weeks and go back to Canada."  Of course, since then, I have seen none of them but have seen scullers.  I spoke with kayakers before we left this morning, I described it to them and they said they were either outriggers or Paralympic training(although I did not see anything to qualify).

One of the reason we chose to stop here is because of a "European" village here.  It was about 1/2 mile away from our marina and was a nice walk.  It was indeed like a small European village with outdoor dining and drinks and shops.  We were there during the week and I would think there was more activity during the weekend.  The Italian restaurant we ate out was very good.  We stayed here for 1 night and now on to St Augustine!
